Capitalism has been criticized and admired from different perspectives since its inception. Marx, for example, saw both progress and devastating social and self-destructive consequences in capitalism. In today's discussion, social inequality, poverty and the overuse of natural resources (e.g. the atmosphere) are at the forefront of criticism, while proponents point to the progress made in capitalist systems in terms of technology and living standards. In the lecture, we will first look at current problems and achievements of different variants of capitalism. Building on this, we will ask about other alternative ways of shaping capitalism and alternatives to capitalism. We will also look at the question of how a transition to these alternatives can take place and discuss these alternatives critically. Among other things, we will look at the unconditional basic income, property-owning democracy and socialist and libertarian alternatives. In particular, we will consider proposals from the current debate.Dates
