Ideals are often criticized in the public and in political science as unrealistic. Yet they play an important role in discussions regarding the direction in which our society should be changed. Within the framework of ideals or realistic utopias, comprehensive solutions to current problems such as rising inequality and growing dissatisfaction with liberal-democratic political systems can be worked out. In the seminar we will deal with concrete proposals, such as Rawls' Property Owning Democracy, the unconditional basic income (e.g. Van Parijs), market socialism (e.g. Cohen or Roemer) as well as the discussion about the political relevance and practical feasibility of ideals (e.g. in Amartya Sen).Dates
