This seminar is a theoretical and empirical introduction into the post-COVID transformation of capitalism. The course revolves around several interesting questions. How will “post-Corona capitalism” look like (Nölke 2022)? Are we currently witnessing a “great transformation” (Polanyi 1944), a “creative destruction” (Schumpeter 1942) or a “great reset” (Schwab/Malleret 2020) of liberal and coordinated “varieties of capitalism” (Hall/Soskice 2001)? What have been the costs & benefits of government interventions (e.g. lockdown) on politics, economy and society during the COVID-19 pandemic? Which companies and sectors have benefited or suffered from the COVID-19 crisis? How was the democratic rule of law affected by emergency measures? Why and how strongly has society been polarized by the pandemic (interventions)? What role did the state and international organizations play in the mitigation of the corona crisis? Why did some countries master the crisis (and transformation) better than others? These and similar questions (e.g. regarding post-communist transformation) are discussed intensively during the seminar, underpinned by newest academic literature and empirical data or indicators. The general empirical focus lies on the post-COVID transformation of political economies. By attending the course, students will acquire conceptual and methodological skills to analyze political-economic systems and dynamic interdependent phenomena.Dates
